This web site first appeared in November 1998 to try to meet a need. Until that time there were very few web pages available with any information about Ashton. Since the web site first appeared, it has been expanded and developed.
The site now attracts visitors from around the world, many of them people who have been born in Ashton but moved away and many of them people researching their family trees trying to find out about the home place of their ancestors.
Many local people use the site to find out more about their town and to check for forthcoming events on the "What's On" page.
A message board was added to the site so that visitors can exchange ideas. Unfortunately this has had to move several times as some of the free service providers have disappeared.
In 2008 a new Photo Blog was created as a companion to this site. Photos of Ashton and the surrounding areas are added to this blog on most days. Viewers have the opportunity to write comments about the pictures.
The web site is produced independently, with no financial assistance. It is an "unofficial" site and has no connection with Tameside Council. It will continue to develop and further pages will be added from time to time.
Every care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the content of this site, with many sources having been consulted, although it cannot be guaranteed that every detail is correct. Users of the site wishing to visit museums, etc. should check that opening times or other details have not changed.
The webmaster welcomes comments and suggestions about the site and is happy to answer emailed enquiries. Many of the developments that have taken place on the website are the result of suggestions from visitors.
